RG Carter Grand Tour Cycle Relay 2011 – Review

May 11th, 2011

The Grand Cycle was a smashing success!

With enthusiastic involvement from many RG Carter group members, our charity cycle event saw riders covering 35 miles throughout Norfolk!  Here’s a review of activities on the two days;

Saturday 7th May

Event Marshals on the day included Fisher•Bullen employees and their families:-

John Turkentine
Jenny Turkentine
Nicola, Ryan and Emilia Claxton
Ben Swift
Ian Gallon
Nicole Reynolds
Sharon Hall
Emma Rowles
Lorna Gagen

The first Marshals arrived at 8am to start putting up the marquee, gazebos, signage, chairs, tables, balloons and bunting in time to welcome the 67 riders expected to arrive at around 11am, who were setting off out of the R G Carter Drayton office at 9:30am.

At 10:50am the first rider came across the finish line closely followed by two other riders who arrived at 10:55am – completing the event in under an hour and a half.

Sandwiches, fruit, chocolate bars and hot and cold drinks were laid on to ensure that all riders, marshals and spectators were welcomed at the finish line.

All riders made the 35 mile ride (and were presented with a medal by John Turkentine) with two stop off points along the way to refill with refreshments. By 1:30pm all riders had arrived at Fakenham and so a total of around 80 people were collected at the event finish.

The event batten was brought on the route to pass onto Fisher•Bullen who in turn pass it onto the next office (King’s Lynn) until the batten eventually returns to the Drayton office after the tenth leg (last leg) has been completed.

The day finished around 2pm and all went smoothly with beautiful May sunshine throughout and was enjoyed by all.

Sunday 7th May

John Turkentine
Jenny Turkentine
Nicola and Ryan Claxton
Ben Swift

There were two ‘Check In points’ the first at North Creake and the 2nd at Sandringham.

Unfortunately we had three riders who got punctures; Ben Spalding who had a puncture before the event started, Nick Tappin at around the half way point and Tony Blackburn on the last 3rd.

The finish line was the R G Carter King’s Lynn office, where staff were waiting to greet our riders with a photo along with fruit, chocolate bars, cold drinks and orders were taken for the burger van down the road!!!

Other than the punctures the day ran very smoothly, the weather brightened up towards the afternoon and the day was enjoyed by all.  All the riders were presented with a medal and certificate at the finish.

FisherBullen received their second Graham Allen award in six years at the Presentation on 15th October 2009

This is the twenty-seventh year of the Graham Allen Award which was inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Councillor G.S. Allen, first Chairman of North Norfolk District Council. Since then, the award, in the form of a bronze plaque, has been presented annually by the Council to the scheme considered to make the most significant contribution to the conservation of the built environment within the District. Schemes considered worthy of commendation are also acknowledged by the presentation of certificates. The panel of judges comprises of members elected from the Development Control Committees, the relevant Portfolio Member and Mr Edward Allen (who represents the Allen family).
During the years, awards have been made for both the conservation and restoration of listed and unlisted buildings and also for new buildings which, through their design, including the innovative use of traditional building forms and detailing, contribute to the built environment.
